Cantatas in Context
Cantatas in Context, a series devoted to the church cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, features performances by the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the New York Baroque Soloists, under the artistic direction of Mary Dalton Greer. The series offers a deeper appreciation of Bach's sacred vocal music by presenting programs organized around the concept of the liturgical year which was integral to Bach's conception of the cantatas. Each concert features works composed for the same occasion in the church year or other events such as weddings or the Inauguration of the Leipzig Town Council. While Bach's instrumental works are widely performed today, his sacred vocal works, apart from the B-minor Mass and the Passions according to John and Matthew, receive relatively few performances. Cantatas in Context seeks to restore the cantatas to their rightful place beside Bach's more familiar masterpieces. Launched in March, 2001, Cantatas in Context is part of "Great Music at St. Bartholomew's Church" in New York City.

"...the final piece was finely coordinated, from its robust introduction to the resounding echo of its concluding sung chord."
